On any given day, you can hear the gentle sounds of horses neighing and maybe the laughter of someone enjoying the serene environment of nature and horses at SOOFA Ranch. As the Executive Director, I’m constantly inspired by the magical sounds that happens here. Recently, I was deeply moved by a powerful sound of what can be achieved through collective effort and unity—the incredible fundraising success of Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, driven by her sorority sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), was a sound of unity, collaboration and success.
When President Joe Biden announced he was stepping down from his 2024 presidential run and endorsed Kamala Harris, something extraordinary happened. Within 24 hours, Harris's supporters, spearheaded by the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc (AKA), raised over $81 million. This astounding feat included a Zoom call that alone brought in over a million dollars in just a few hours. As I marveled at this show of group economics, I couldn’t help but think about how we at SOOFA Ranch could learn from this to support our own mission.
Kamala Harris's campaign success was a testament to the power of unity and shared purpose. Her sorority sisters, bound by a commitment to uplift one another, showcased the strength of collective action. Their efforts weren’t just about raising funds; they were about rallying behind a cause they believed in, leveraging their networks, and working tirelessly towards a common goal. This sense of community and purpose is something we can mirror here at SOOFA Ranch.
At SOOFA Ranch, we believe in the transformative power of equine-assisted therapy. We’ve seen firsthand how our programs can improve mental health, build confidence, and foster emotional healing. However, to continue making a difference, we need the support of our community. Inspired by the AKA sisters, I envision a future where our supporters come together with the same passion and commitment to ensure the longevity of our programs.
Imagine the impact we could make if each person who believes in our mission contributed a small amount, much like how Kamala Harris's supporters did. Their collective effort led to monumental change, and we can achieve the same. Whether you contribute your $5 donation and/or share our mission with friends and family to give their $5.00 a month, every action counts because as we have seen together we can make a powerful difference.
Here are five key lessons we can take from AKA and Kamala Harris's fundraising triumph.

Lesson 1: Harnessing the Power of Unity
The Unity Behind AKA’s Success
The unity within AKA was the driving force behind Kamala Harris’s impressive fundraising. Sorority sisters across the nation came together, bound by a common purpose and a shared vision. Their collective effort was a testament to what can be achieved when people unite for a cause they believe in deeply.
Bringing Unity to SOOFA Ranch
At SOOFA Ranch, we’ve always believed in the power of community. But what if we took it a step further? Imagine all our supporters—volunteers, donors, and the families we serve—coming together with the same unwavering commitment as AKA. By fostering a stronger sense of unity and purpose, we can amplify our impact. We can start by organizing regular community events, creating forums for supporters to share their stories, and building a culture of inclusion and collaboration.

Lesson 2: Leveraging Existing Networks
AKA’s Extensive Network
AKA's network was key to their success. Sororities and fraternities rely on intimate bonds and community. This network helped AKA mobilize members and resources to support Kamala Harris.
Tapping Into Our Networks
SOOFA Ranch has its own unique network—families, local businesses, alumni, and community leaders. By actively engaging these groups, we can expand our reach and resources. Let’s host networking events, partner with local organizations, and create opportunities for our supporters to connect and collaborate. By leveraging our existing networks, we can build a stronger foundation for our fundraising efforts.

Lesson 3: Effective Use of Technology
The Power of Virtual Fundraising
The Zoom call that raised over a million dollars for Kamala Harris’s campaign showcased the potential of virtual fundraising. Technology allows us to reach a broader audience and engage supporters in ways that were previously unimaginable.
Embracing Technology at SOOFA Ranch
Imagine hosting virtual tours of SOOFA Ranch, where supporters from all over the world can see firsthand the impact of their donations. We could organize online fundraising events, webinars, and live Q&A sessions with our team and the families we serve. By embracing technology, we can create more opportunities for engagement and make it easier for people to support our mission.

Lesson 4: Creating a Sense of Urgency
The Impact of Immediate Action
The swift fundraising response to Kamala Harris’s endorsement was driven by a sense of urgency. People were motivated to act quickly, knowing their support was needed right away.
Generating Urgency for SOOFA Ranch
We can create a similar sense of urgency for our fundraising campaigns. By setting time-sensitive goals and clearly communicating the immediate needs of our programs, we can inspire our supporters to take action. For example, we could launch a matching gift challenge or a countdown campaign to fund a specific project, highlighting the direct impact their donations will have on the lives of our participants.

Lesson 5: Clear and Compelling Messaging
The Power of a Strong Narrative
AKA’s fundraising success was also due to their ability to communicate a clear and compelling message. They shared a narrative that resonated with their audience, highlighting the importance and impact of their cause.
Crafting Our Story
At SOOFA Ranch, we have countless stories of transformation and healing. By sharing these stories and clearly articulating the benefits of our programs, we can create a powerful narrative that inspires support. Let’s highlight the journeys of our participants, the dedication of our volunteers, and the tangible difference donations make. By crafting a compelling story, we can connect with our supporters on a deeper level and drive our fundraising efforts.

Applying These Lessons
Setting Clear Goals
Setting clear and specific fundraising goals provides direction and motivation. For SOOFA Ranch, this means breaking down our larger objectives into manageable steps and regularly updating our supporters on our progress. Celebrating milestones along the way will help maintain momentum and engagement.
Engaging Storytelling
Engaging storytelling is crucial for connecting with our audience. We can share success stories, personalizing our mission and making it more relatable. Highlighting the real-life impact of our programs can create an emotional connection and inspire generosity.
Building Relationships
Building strong, long-term relationships with our donors is essential. Regular communication, expressing gratitude, and involving them in our mission will foster loyalty and ongoing support. Personal touches, such as handwritten thank-you notes or personalized updates, can make donors feel valued and appreciated.
Transparency and Accountability
Transparency and accountability are key for building trust. By being open about how donations are used and the impact they have, we can reassure our donors that their contributions are making a difference. Regular updates, detailed reports, and open communication about our finances and outcomes are essential.
Recognition and Appreciation
Recognizing and appreciating our donors’ contributions is vital. Creating donor appreciation events, recognizing donors in our communications, and offering special benefits or opportunities for engagement will foster loyalty and ongoing support.
Fundraising often comes with various challenges, such as donor fatigue, economic downturns, and competition for funds. Identifying these obstacles and developing strategies to address them—such as diversifying our funding sources, increasing our outreach efforts, and staying adaptable—can help us navigate these challenges effectively.
Learning from Setbacks
Setbacks are inevitable in any fundraising effort, but they also provide valuable learning opportunities. By analyzing what went wrong, adapting our strategies, and remaining resilient, we can turn challenges into growth opportunities and improve our future fundraising efforts.
